It may be a while before we have real life Transformers that can adapt to any challenge, but researchers are doing their darnedest to make it happen. Robots are most often created for a specific task. BigDog carries heavy loads, WildCat is fast, and the Sand Flea can jump 3 stories high over obstacles.
However, the wizards over in the University of Pennsylvania's ModLab have created a contraption they've dubbed H.E.R.A.L.D. or the Hybrid Exploration Robot for Air and Land Deployment. It's a quadcopter with two snakebots in tow. Able to cover large distances quickly by air or by land, H.E.R.A.L.D. reaches its destination and deploys the snakebots into tighter areas. It's a must for improved search and rescue. Check out the video of it in action!
